Give each user the view they need

A customer may only need to know whether their equipment is running normally. A maintenance technician needs recent readings and fault history. Your support team may need to compare several sites. The same data should not force all three into the same screen.

We organise dashboards around those decisions. Start with the important status, make exceptions visible and let the user open the detail when it is needed. For a hardware company, the dashboard can become the customer-facing part of the connected product.

Make readings understandable

A number needs a unit, a timestamp and enough context to interpret it. We agree how readings are grouped, how often the screen updates and what the user sees when data is late, missing or outside a valid range.

For example, a refrigeration operator could compare a current temperature with recent history and see how long it has remained outside an agreed range. That is more useful than a chart with no indication of whether an action is needed.

Keep alerts useful as the device count grows

A brief spike should not necessarily create the same response as a sustained problem. We define thresholds, durations, repeated-notification behaviour and acknowledgement with the people who will receive the alerts.

We also plan historical storage and reporting. Keeping every raw reading indefinitely may not be necessary. The right retention and aggregation choices depend on what users need to investigate or report later.
